Tonight I went to an extra swim workout (swim-heavy week for me). This one was opened up to the entire team, and there were some strong swimmers there! It was much more fun to be racing to stay ahead of people - and I was excited to find that I was still the fastest one in the pool (I am a strong swimmer but certainly not fantastic so that's a bit frightening). I hope they come back - it's nice to have a challenge! Anyway, instead of the usual ladder/pyramid workout, our "coach" changed it up for us and had us do the following:
400 meter warmup
300 meters as 25 drill/25 swim
300 meters of kicking
Main Set:
50 hard, 50 easy
100 hard, 50 easy
four times through
I am a firm believer that you get out of a workout what you put into it, and we're not there to socialize, so I swam it pretty hard. Plus there was a woman on my heels who I was determined to stay in front of, so that helped. At one point I hit the wall after one of the hard 100s, and I came up gasping for breath. The guy who was at the wall (I lapped him) just said "Oh my god" as I was recovering. It made me laugh.
Anyway, after the main set we had a 200 warmdown, and I motivated my lane into doing a 100 IM followed by a 100 warmdown. We have some newbies in the pool who don't have strong strokes outside of freestyle, but they were troopers and swam the IM with the rest of us, it was awesome!
The problem with evening workouts is that I am amped when I get home (I much prefer working out in the morning if I can get my butt out of bed). It is now 11:15 and I have finished the work I promised myself I would do when I got home and I'm still wired.
Counting sheep, anyone? Or maybe I should count laps in the pool?
