...a bike ride and a run! I know, shocking.
We had two options for the bike ride: the long ride and the short ride. The long ride was about 30 miles and the short ride was 20 almost exactly. I opted for the short ride. This may have been an underestimation of my suddenly increasing fitness, and I think I should have gone for the longer ride.
I hung with the two lead cyclists for most of the ride, which included a rather long hill right in the middle and then a super-fast ride back to our starting point. I figured out that my average speed was just over 15 mph, which is crazy fast for me on the bike! And I felt really, really good too - even on the climb I felt strong. I was huffing and puffing, but I still felt good. It was nice.
Then we did a 30 minute out-and-back run (15 out, 15 back), which ended up being ~2.7 miles for me. That works out to just over 11 minute miles! I am getting faster! I'm learning that it takes me about ten minutes into the run to feel like I'm not going to die or that my legs aren't going to actually fall off.
I finished the whole thing so early I had to stick around and wait for it to be lunch time so I could go get my usual Baja Fresh burrito! And I feel great right now too.
Tomorrow I have the Stanford tree-athlon tri. It's in Redwood shores and includes a 500 meter swim (essentially a sprint) in the bay, a 20K bike and a 5K run. No problem! :-) The weird part is that the swim finishes at a dock where people pull you out of the water. WTF? Not happy about that. It's a water start too, which should be fun! A big crowd of people starting in the water - my water polo skills are finally going to useful! I'm very nervous. This afternoon I am laying out all of my gear so I don't forget anything, and trying on my various outfits to see which one I think will work the best.
More tomorrow certainly! Can't wait!
